Orthodox Faith Program

The Orthodoxy Program at the Saint Nicholas National Shrine is centered on a comprehensive catechetical initiative designed to deepen understanding of the Orthodox Christian faith among both newcomers and lifelong believers. Through year-round Orthodox Catechesis Courses led by the Shrine’s clergy, participants are introduced to the rich theological, historical, and spiritual foundations of the Orthodox Church. The program begins with an overview of the development of Orthodoxy from the early Church to the present day, providing context for its enduring traditions and teachings. By grounding participants in the Church’s history and sacred catechism, the program creates a strong foundation for further exploration of Orthodox belief and practice.

A core focus of the program is the study of Orthodox doctrine, sacramental life, and sacred tradition. Participants examine the meaning and significance of the Nicene Creed, exploring the Church’s understanding of the Holy Trinity and the saving mission of Christ. The courses also provide detailed instruction on the sacraments—such as Baptism, Eucharist, Marriage, and Confession—which are central to the spiritual life of the faithful. In addition, participants engage deeply with Holy Scripture and the teachings of the early Church Fathers, learning how Scripture and Tradition work together as guiding pillars of Orthodox theology and spiritual formation.

Beyond doctrine, the program emphasizes the lived experience of Orthodox spirituality and worship. Participants explore the structure and meaning of the Divine Liturgy, the role of prayer and ascetic practice, and the concept of Theosis—the transformative journey toward union with God. The courses also highlight the theological significance of Orthodox art, architecture, iconography, and hymnody, demonstrating how sacred beauty reflects and communicates the truths of the faith. Ultimately, the Orthodoxy Program seeks to equip participants with both the knowledge and the spiritual tools necessary to live an authentic Orthodox Christian life, integrating faith, worship, and ethical responsibility into everyday practice while strengthening their connection to the Church community.
