Care for Creation Program

The Care for Creation program at the Saint Nicholas National Shrine is a faith-based environmental initiative inspired by the ecological teachings of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Rooted in the Orthodox understanding of stewardship, the program seeks to educate the community on the spiritual responsibility to protect the natural world while promoting ecological awareness and sustainable living.

A central goal of the program is to advance sustainability and carbon responsibility at the Shrine itself. This includes conducting energy audits, transitioning toward renewable energy sources, and implementing carbon-offset initiatives. The program also promotes environmentally responsible operations through recycling and composting systems, zero-waste events, and sustainable procurement practices that prioritize eco-friendly products and locally sourced materials. By integrating these measures into its daily operations, the Shrine aims to model how faith institutions can reduce their environmental footprint while demonstrating leadership in ecological stewardship.

Beyond the Shrine, the Care for Creation initiative emphasizes community engagement and global collaboration. Volunteer opportunities, youth environmental groups, and educational workshops will empower parishioners, students, and local residents to participate in environmental action, from park clean-ups to conservation efforts. The program will also foster ecumenical and interfaith dialogue on environmental responsibility and collaborate with international initiatives such as the Lemnos Marine Conservation Project, supporting efforts to protect marine ecosystems and promote sustainable stewardship of the natural environment. Through these partnerships, the Shrine seeks to cultivate a culture of environmental awareness, inspire responsible stewardship, and contribute to the broader global movement for ecological justice.
