Bereavement Program
The Bereavement Program at the Saint Nicholas National Shrine is designed to provide compassionate support and spiritual healing to individuals and families experiencing the loss of loved ones. Rooted in the Shrine’s mission as a sacred place of prayer, remembrance, and hope at Ground Zero, the program offers a structured framework of counseling resources, pastoral care, and community connection. Through faith-based reflection, guided support, and opportunities for shared remembrance, the program helps individuals navigate grief while finding solace in the Shrine’s spiritual environment and the enduring message of hope represented by Saint Nicholas.
A central component of the program is the development of grief-sensitive training and psychological first aid for staff, clergy, and volunteers. Through in-person workshops, ongoing professional development sessions, and virtual webinars, participants learn how to respond compassionately to individuals experiencing grief or emotional distress. These efforts ensure that the Shrine community is equipped to respond thoughtfully and effectively to those seeking comfort.
